Final year Dental student, International Islamic University Malaysia (Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia). Public Relation Officer of Dental Students' Society IIUM.
The target of the project is to instill oral health knowledge and awareness among the villagers of Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Pergam, Kemaman, Terengganu. We aim to deliver oral health education in order to increase their awareness. They have been chosen for our community project because of their lack of dental health awareness and the worrisome habits of betel nut chewing since early age. Thus, this project becomes a platform for the students to provide oral health services and contribute one-off charity for the community there.
We divide ourselves into 6 groups, each allocated with a task to educate on a specific area ; ORAL CANCER, DIETARY ADVICE, ORAL HEALTH EDUCATION, GERIATRIC, PAEDIATRIC and TOBACCO CESSATION. We will also conduct oral screening to check the dental health and detect presence of any cancerous lesion in their mouth. To attract the villagers, we will conduct games, toothbrushing drills and lucky draw. We also would like to use the opportunity to donate basic kitchen supplies, toys, and children books to the villagers.

We are the final year students in Faculty of Dentistry International Islamic University Malaysia. Our campus is located in Kuantan, Pahang. Every year, we organize a community reachout project that provides oral health education to certain targetted community. Previously, we reached out to the people in Felda Neram, Perkampungan Sungai Isap, Kampung Padang and many more.
First, the location is ideal for students to reach. This enabled us to study about the population, living condition, educational status and perform situational analysis before the BIG DAY! This would also enable us to conveniently visit again for follow up on their oral health condition.
Second, we are concerned on the fact that the community there have HIGH RISK of ORAL CANCER! The people there consume betel quid (sireh), alcohol and smokes on a regular basis and start from as young as adolescence.
Third, the people there have difficulties to attend dental clinic to perform check-up. There is no public transport available in the area so they have to walk to see the dentist! (that is only if they are in pain). Most of the adults have no education and no awareness on oral health.
Fourth, they can understand and speak in Malay language. So, we are confident that we are able to communicate with them well during the event.
